Today, I am so excited to share an updated review of one of my favorite projects that we completed in our first home. This kitchen remodel literally transformed the whole feel of our first house. The kitchen was dark and the cabinets were literally falling off the hinges, when we moved in. It was a mess. We also wanted to make our kitchen more functional. Our kitchen was in bad shape but we had a tight budget to complete the kitchen remodel. Today I am sharing how we took the steps to transform our kitchen and stay on budget. I will be sharing how we completed our kitchen remodel on a budget for under $10,000.
Serious planning with your kitchen remodel is the best way to stay on track and not have surprises. Put your budget on paper and don’t be afraid to negotiate.
We started by listing out everything that we would need for our kitchen remodel, such as hardware, sink, countertops, backsplash, installation costs, fabrication costs, demo costs etc… I definitely recommend spreadsheeting it out. Create an inspiration board for your kitchen. Then start your research on places to buy cabinets, countertops, and installers, and start price shopping.
1.). Create a rough layout and design for your kitchen to ensure it is more functional than before, make sure you measure.
2). We priced out cabinets at multiple places. We went to Ikea, Home Depot, and other local places. Ikea’s cabinets were going to run us over $5,000. Home Depot was going to be around the same price and the local family owned place was about $4,000. The local company we chose had solid wood cabinets with dovetail drawers and soft close doors. We were beyond happy with the price and a good friend of ours had used them as well and gave an excellent review.
3). Price out your countertop choices! Countertop selection was definitely the most challenging decision for my husband and I. However, we decided on Quartz and were so happy with that decision.
4). Find a fabricator for your countertops they will install and cut the countertops. We found an amazing fabricator who didn’t make us pay additional fees for sink cutouts or drilling for faucets. That may not sound like a big deal but every penny counted. They charged us $30 a square foot to fabricate and install our quartz countertops. We also hired a cabinet installer directly to install the cabinets and had someone else who specialized in tile install to complete the backsplash. We were able to save by going directly to all of these individuals.
6). Shop for sinks, hardware, and faucets. Amazon is where we found all of this at amazing prices you can see some of the options below.
7). Find someone to demo your kitchen – we chose to donate our cabinets to a non-profit organization for veterans. It is a great cause and it allowed us to demo our kitchen for around $300.
Demo of the kitchen: $300
Cabinets: $4,000
Installation of cabinets $600
Countertops: $3800
Hardware/sinks/faucets/lighting $600
Backsplash materials & installation $450
Total remodel cost: $9,750
*I didn’t include the appliances in this cost breakdown.
